At least once in adult life, everyone has faced the agonising choices that come with redesigning their living space. In such moments, more than ever, you find yourself looking for a sign from above. We offer you this selection of interior photos — genuine inspiration for an outward transformation.
Losko Magazine has gathered 40 interior photos featuring elements you will almost certainly want to see in your own home.
1. A monochrome kitchen interior
A beautiful kitchen interior captured by a Swiss photographer based in Stockholm. Jesper Florbrant (Jesper Florbrant) photographs monochrome domestic settings with a serene atmosphere, and this image is no exception. A colour palette like this will never tire the eye.
2. A bright bedroom made from natural materials
The concept behind this bedroom design belongs to the team at architectural studio Ruetemple. This kind of project is a great solution for parents whose children love early mornings and noisy starts to the day. Instead of waking sleeping adults, the kids will be busy exploring the unusual staircase and sleeping structures.
3. A bathroom in a classic colour palette
A dark room with an oval bathtub? Yes, please! The authors of this cosy interior are the team at Bower Architecture, an Australian contemporary architecture and design studio based in Melbourne. They used natural materials and minimalist textures throughout every element of the interior to create a calm and inviting atmosphere.
4. A small, warm domestic space
As the cold sets in, an interior like this seems ever more suited — if not perfectly made — for seeing out the winter. Every necessity for a comfortable wait through the chill is present; what more could one need? A timber house, a lit fireplace and pleasing tableware that satisfies the inner aesthete all add warmth to a sunless season.
5. A contrasting bohemian bedroom
Contrasting walls are always a delight. And when you look at an interior built from crisp lines and precise forms, the same feeling arises. This photograph captures the combination of quite delicate interior elements with sharp, very straight ones. It is a union that produces harmony.
6. A bathroom in natural tones
A bright, warm bathroom tucked away in a house in Taiwan. Natural materials and earthy colours. The project is the work of local architecture and design studio HAO Design, which has a wealth of interesting projects created in line with each client's individual preferences.
7. A bathroom with chalkboard walls
This bathroom is surrounded by chalkboard walls — an opportunity to reinvent the interior at any time and without significant expense. It feels as though life is about to stir in this room, with Tim Burton's animated characters ready to wander in and out. The project is the work of Jensen Architect.
8. A tall window opening onto a patio
The main strengths of this design are the tall windows, the abundance of natural light and the patio courtyard. A natural colour palette and materials that inspire an acute desire to be there. The photograph was taken by Lucas Allen, who divides his time between Melbourne, Australia and Brooklyn, New York.
9. No colour boundary between floor and walls
This bathroom is located in a former foundry building constructed in 1913. Ceramic tiles in no fewer than three colours and nine shades are combined in bold graphic patterns that erase the boundary between floor and walls. The project is the work of design agency SABO project.
10. A minimalist bathroom
This bathroom is part of one of Vancouver's many lofts, brought to life by interior design studio Falken Reynolds. The photograph is the work of Aimée Mazzenga — an architectural and interior photographer. Minimalism in its purest form.
11. Replacing the inner courtyard of a house
The owners of this house in Kuwait had no inner courtyard, which is precisely why a generous abundance of green plants was brought inside. This was made possible by the work of AGi Architects — an architecture practice with offices in Madrid and Kuwait. Calm, monochromatic colours create a sense of warmth and bring harmony to the interior space.
12. A kitchen in pastel tones
The most striking quality of this kitchen interior is its large islands in pastel colours that sit in easy harmony with one another. The space was created by Note Design Studio and is located in Stockholm, Sweden.
13. A photographer's mobile studio
Filmmaker Zak Bot was inspired by the idea of working on the road. He acquired a decade-old compact truck and converted it into a mobile studio — a move that gave him the freedom to travel, no longer tethered to any single place.
14. A staircase that floats in mid-air
This geometrically precise staircase is constructed from bamboo and steel wire, which lends it a distinctly contemporary look. It appears to hover in the air, and in doing so, takes up remarkably little of the room's space.
15. A graphic division of rooms
Diamond-shaped tiles in black, white and grey visually separate the dining area from the other rooms of this apartment in Taichung, Taiwan. The project was created by design studio Zaxis Design.
16. A bathroom that evokes a spa
Situated in a Brooklyn townhouse, this bathroom calls to mind the atmosphere of a spa. The zones are distinguished from one another through colour and the materials that frame them: the wall behind the sinks is painted a deep navy blue, while the bath sits slightly elevated above the rest of the room on a low wooden platform.
17. Transparent, rustic, contemporary
This is a place made for rest and relaxation. It sits within what might be called a rural setting, yet this does nothing to diminish its thoroughly modern character. The space was created by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
18. Hexagonal tiles that recall a honeycomb
The one — and arguably central — intricate detail of this interior announces itself immediately: softly toned hexagonal tiles interlocking along clean, simple lines. They are reminiscent of a honeycomb. The combination of numerous understated elements never overwhelms the space, and their pastel hues lend the whole room a quiet sense of calm.
19. A wooden kitchen interior
Exposed wooden beams, wall sconces, a wooden kitchen island with a sink — these are the things that make it easy to fall in love with this interior. Credit goes to Kira Corbin and Jason Varney for designing and photographing such an interior, respectively.
20. Door–Windows
Architecture studio Marston Architects created this unusual space featuring pivoting door–windows that connect the home's living area to the back garden.
21. A Combination of Simple Details and Calm Colours
The undeniable strength of this interior lies in its neutral, minimalist colour palette. Once again, exposed beams and tall windows draw the eye and inspire a sense of personal domestic comfort. The photograph was found, again, in the portfolio of Lucas Allen.
22. The Staircase as a Bold Accent in the Interior
This photograph and the interior it captures were clearly made for lovers of yellow and admirers of staircases. The pairing of this colour with the classic base tones of black and white feels timeless, while a minimalist approach to furnishing domestic space continues to grow in popularity.
23. The Visual Unity of Two Staircases
The staircase in this photograph is an exercise in visual illusion and a remarkable find from architecture practice MAKE. These interior and architectural innovators are based in Melbourne, and this particular work was captured by photographer Peter Bennetts.
24. A Nautical Theme in a Kitchen Interior
The design came from architecture firm Yamamar. They created this kitchen interior evoking the seashore — specifically the place where land meets water. This effect is achieved not only through the colour palette but also through the shape of the tiles, which recall marine life, fish in particular. It sounds unlikely, but it works.
25. Large Windows in a Forest Home
The house concealing this living room is located in Martis Camp — a luxury private community. The colour palette and materials of the interior are a fitting match. The design was developed by Sagemodern.
26. A Sculptural Staircase
This Mumbai apartment was designed by the studio Arquitectura en Movimiento. The staircase serves as a sculptural element whose open structure allows light and air to pass freely through it.
27. Expanding Living Space Vertically
To increase the apartment's sense of space, the contemporary architecture practice Carles Enrich used a small staircase. This created an additional level of height above the lower living area.
28. Perfectly sized furniture
Architecture firm FormaFatal created an interior that leaves no room for boredom. This was made possible through bespoke built-in furniture combined with intricate industrial detailing.
29. A gallery of windows in a hilltop home
This house sits at the top of a hill, so it is only natural that its rooms have high ceilings and large windows. There is an abundance of light and a complete absence of clutter. This beauty is the work of design studio JUSH.
30. An interior of geometric lines
Robertson Architects designed a bathroom interior that embodies the values of minimalism as a way of life. Strict geometry, harmonious details — everything in its place.
31. A combination of simple details in an interior
This colour palette, these concrete stair treads and the circular tile patterns all feel authentically considered. The project is the work of architecture firm RNDR Studio.
32. Woven stair railings
The structure of these railings — an interlacing of metal rods — is the sole complex element in this interior. Everything around them is pared back to the utmost simplicity. Similar lines reappear in the pattern of the wooden ceiling cladding. Plenty of white, plenty of light. For that, credit goes to MONOLOKO design.
33. Alejandro F. Sticotti's wooden bookshelf
This bookshelf is the work of Alejandro Francisco Sticotti. It is handmade: clean lines, geometric forms and absolute simplicity. The material is timber sourced from the forests of South America.
34. A multi-level interior
This home — a synthesis of cool concrete walls, warm natural light and living greenery — was created by architecture firm TerraETuma. The generous, multi-level space is clearly divided into distinct zones: living room, dining room–kitchen and workspace.
35. A way down from the upper floor
This is a nod to the inner child that lives in each of us. The slide itself was conceived as a playful feature for children and came about thanks to Terry Bale.
36. A home hammock
This open-plan space was created by Cuns Studio. A hammock built into the floor of the second storey connects both levels of the house, allowing everyone inside to communicate freely with one another regardless of which floor they are on.
37. A suspended raft in the patio
A country house designed by the architecture firm MJArchitecture, features an unusual detail tucked within the patio space. A suspended raft hovering just above the floor level makes for a wonderful spot to rest in the open air.
38. The unity of interior and exterior space
Looking at the design of this interior, it is hard to decide where one would rather spend time: inside or outside the house. The patio zone flows seamlessly and harmoniously into the interior, carrying natural motifs through the colour palette and the authenticity of the materials. Very calm, and very welcoming.
39. Merging two eras in one interior
A fireplace styled after an earlier age coexists with a contemporary log-storage shelf. Lundberg Design is based in San Francisco, and it was they who conceived the interior design of this country retreat.
40. An exceptional ceiling treatment
The gentle interplay of marble and timber elements draws the design's mood close to that of the natural world. Natural materials and a soft, unforced colour palette create a profound sense of comfort. The project was conceived and realised by the Australian architecture practice Bower Architecture.
It is quite apparent that absolute beauty is most often found in the imitation of, or closeness to, nature's inherent qualities — whether in the colour palette, the source of light, or the materials from which the interior details are made. All of this imparts a feeling of complete comfort and tranquillity.
