Light as art: elegant designer lighting

Designer lighting fixtures
Text: Alina Shaykhutdinova

The everyday objects around us quietly shape an atmosphere and set a certain mood. To share some inspiration and aesthetic with you, we sought out designer lighting fixtures and compiled a selection of ten studios working in lighting design.

1. Søren Rose

Designer Søren Rose (Søren Rose) lives and works in New York. Several years ago he set out on a road trip across America to collect lamps from the first half of the twentieth century. Inspired by the collection he amassed, he went on to create the Tribeca series.

2. CB2

American company CB2 has created hexagonal pendant lights. They are made from steel and finished in polished silver or brass.

Price: $79.95 and $69.95 respectively

3. Gravelli

The Czech firm Gravelli makes homeware and jewellery from concrete. Their mission is to present concrete in a new light — as both an aesthetic and a practical material. Their workshop is based in Prague and also serves as a showroom, where visitors can observe the production process and see the finished pieces. The Gravelli Fiber series, executed in an industrial style, comprises four lamps distinguished by their geometrically shaped sockets.

Price: 2,600 Kč or $102.38

4. Michael Anastassiades

London-based designer Michael Anastassiades (Michael Anastassiades) creates simple yet memorable objects for the home. His studio's philosophy is rooted in a continuous search for eclecticism, individuality and timeless qualities in design. Michael Anastassiades trained as an engineer at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, before going on to earn a Master's degree in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art. His Mobile Chandelier series from 2008 and 2015 is strikingly unconventional.

5. Slamp

Slamp is an Italian designer lighting company founded in 1994. Its founder Roberto Ziliani describes the company as: "the perfect marriage between the inspiration of great masters and strong foresight, great passion and unquestionable skill." The Étoile lamp recalls a futuristic flower, or a ballerina's tutu floating in response to a dancer's movements. The lamp is made from refractive layers of Lentiflex®.

6. Lambert et Fils

The studio Lambert et Fils, dedicated to lighting design, was founded in Montreal in 2010 by Samuel Lambert. The company's work is associated with mid-century modernism and the industrial era.

Price: $780.00, $1,285.00, $780.00 and $705.00 respectively

7. Wästberg

Wästberg is a Swedish lighting company designing fixtures for both residential and public spaces. The w171 alma lamp resembles the surface of water disturbed by a pebble. It can be mounted on a ceiling or wall, or hung freely, depending on the requirement. The lamp was originally developed for the Alma project in Stockholm.

8. Poetic Lab

The studio Poetic Lab was founded in London in 2013. The studio's philosophy holds that design is a silent poetry composed of mind and matter. The Ripple lamp is perhaps the most unusual piece in the entire selection. It consists of two parts, the upper of which rotates continuously. The irregular glass causes the light cast by the lamp to project a mystical, ever-changing pattern across surfaces.

9. Roll&Hill

Roll&Hill was founded in 2010 by Jason Miller and has spent the past several years collaborating with independent designers to create a collection of beautiful and distinctive lighting. The Agnes lamp series was originally conceived as a candelabra. In its current iteration, glowing tubes replace the candles. The modular system makes it easy to install the fixtures and adapt them to any space, while pivoting joints allow the light to be directed wherever it is needed.

Price: €990.00, €4,720.00, €990.00 and €11,000.00 respectively

10. Lumina

The Italian firm Lumina has been in operation since 1980. Their Matrix lamp series comprises several variations of wall and ceiling fixtures. All of them feature pivot joints, allowing each rod to tilt up and down through 90 degrees.

If these lights caught your eye, we have a few more to recommend from our earlier coverage. First, Paul Fowler's fire-inspired lamps. Second, the flat DISC lamp by German design studio Robert Fehse. And finally, the Nod Light by Simon Frambach.
